The Story Behind the Silk

For too long, we’ve accepted that waking up with dry, creased skin and tangled hair is just part of the morning. I started Cwtch Silk because I was done fighting my bedding. I wanted to move away from 'thirsty' cottons that strip our moisture, and instead, create a sleep ritual that actually nurtures the skin while we rest.

As a mother and a Type 1 diabetic living in Swansea, I have spent years dealing with the consequences of sleeping on standard high-street sheets. Between the dry, itchy skin of eczema and the intense night sweats that can accompany blood sugar fluctuations, I realised that the fabrics we are told are "natural" or "affordable" were often the very things making my symptoms worse.

For a long time, the market has been dominated by two extremes: thirsty cottons and plastic-based synthetics. While organic cotton is often praised for being natural, it is a devastatingly absorbent fibre. It acts like a sponge, drinking up your skin’s natural oils and any expensive night creams you have applied. For me, and now for my two-year-old son who also struggles with eczema-prone skin, this meant waking up feeling parched and irritated because the bed had spent eight hours stripping our skin's moisture barrier.

On the other end of the scale are synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon. These are essentially plastics woven into fabric. They are non-biodegradable, they trap heat, and they don't breathe. Instead of a comfortable night, they create a "cling-film" effect that spikes body temperature and causes friction. This friction creates "micro-tears" on sensitive skin, leading to inflammation and morning redness.

The Hygiene Factor: A Cleaner Way to Sleep

One of the most overlooked struggles of dealing with night sweats or skin conditions is the constant battle to keep your bed hygienic. Because cotton is so absorbent, it doesn't just drink your skin’s moisture—it holds onto it. When you sweat into cotton, the fabric stays damp for hours, creating a warm, moist environment where bacteria and dust mites thrive. Unless you have the time and energy to change your bed linen every single day, cotton can quickly become a "silent irritant" in your bedroom.

This is where the biological miracle of silk changes the game. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and far less prone to bacterial growth than plant-based or synthetic fibres. Because it doesn't soak up moisture the way cotton does, it doesn't provide the "petri dish" environment that bacteria need to colonise. It stays fresher for longer, providing peace of mind for the exhausted mother, the diabetic recovering from a low, or the woman navigating the heat of menopause.

Join the Ritual

I want to be very clear: silk isn't a medical cure. It won't stop a diabetic low or a menopausal hot flash. However, it changes what happens after the sweat. On cotton, you are left in a damp, heavy, freezing swamp. Silk handles moisture differently; it stays smooth and temperature-regulated, ensuring you don't wake up shivering in wet, cold sheets. It is about dignity, comfort, and waking up feeling like your skin has been nurtured, not attacked.

The Pure Protein Embrace Launch Collection

That is where the idea of the "Cwtch" came from. In Wales, a cwtch is more than just a hug; it is a protective, safe embrace. I wanted to create a sleeping ritual that felt like that—a Pure Protein Embrace. By using 100% biodegradable 22 momme Mulberry silk, I found a material that actually aligns with our human biology.
